Inception Characters Don’t Understand Inception

My take: Inception was alright, a lot of hype (a LOT) followed by a decent yet convoluted movie that was a little too in-love with itself from the word "Go." I've never been a Nolan fan (his movies are fine diversions, I just do not think they are as be-all end-all as many like to think). The movie wanted to be a bit of Matrix for the new generation (a gaping hole which will not be filled for some time, unless Tron:Legacy has it's way, and on that I am skeptical as well).
My main issue with the film is that it presents a certain set of rules, as all fantasy films do, and maintaining a suspension of disbelief is such a key notion in a film like this; push it too far and it's hard to feel a strong attachment to the characters and story. There were a lot of compelling elements, the expected holes (I'll give them a break) but when it comes to dealing with how people's minds work in the dream-state, well that is something we can all relate to and if I can't feel that connection off the top, then I am just waiting for the wrap-up after the first scene.
I'll give Nolan a break, this was his tour-de-force that he's been sitting on the whole of his career and there's really no way to make your "artistic masterpiece" also mesh with what's expected of "big-budget Hollywood blockbuster with huge grossing box office" - that's a rather tall order for even the most accomplished filmmakers. I still consider Memento a truly cinematic milestone, it's one of the true Mind-F movies (again, like the Matrix and of course Fight Club) but then, so much more successful than it's higher-budget peers as it has a lot to say philisophically in areas that the other films don't even approach. I am happy to see Inception come and go, it was enjoyable but I don't think it will be as important as others of the genre.
